Details

This course is an introduction to management information systems, the five components to MIS, and their strategic role in supporting management activities. Topics include: role of information systems in business; fundamentals of information technology - hardware, software, communication and computer networks, databases and enterprise systems; ethical issues in the information age, as well as issues of globalization, social impact, privacy, and security.

The focus of our management information systems course is to enable student to be able to provide management with a competitive advantage in spreadsheet and database design and application, and coupling these tools with internet forms and online client interactions.

Project Outcomes:

  1. A simple solution to a manageable challenge for introductory level MIS students
  2. Identify and make a recommendation to a Business Strategy
  3. Identify and make a recommendation of a sustainable competitive advantage that will support the organization's business strategy
Project Examples

Beginning this Fall 2021, students of varying program types will participate as consultants in understanding Information Systems in business today. Students will demonstrate and understanding of processes, value chain, research [in] organizations, research data, clean data, and manipulate data in a data analytics tool (i.e. Tableau) to develop spreadsheets, dashboards, databases and a comprehensive report of their selected organization.

As a participating organization, you’ll be asked to provide a particular question, topic or challenge that will be their area of focus. Their review and recommendations may encompass other areas as well, but they’ll provide specific recommendations to address your chosen topic. Students will work with you to understand your project goals and constraints.

Examples could include, but are not limited to

  • Spreadsheet applications (Excel), including dashboards
  • Database applications (Access), incorporating online forms for data entry or client records
  • Identify and make a recommendation to a Business Strategy
  • Identify and make a recommendation of a sustainable competitive advantage that will support the organization's business strategy

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
